“The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” – Albert Schweitzer

Remember when you were younger and full of dreams you couldn’t wait to make happen? If you were anything like me, you spent hours pretending to be that person you admired. There was something special about that person and you felt an immediate connection. For me, it was Michael Jackson. I loved his voice, his energy on a record, and just how he made me feel. I knew at a very young age that I wanted to make people feel like that. I wanted to move people through song. I didn’t know how I’d do it, but I knew I was meant to do it. Who or what experience made you feel this way? Before you say, ‘Nobody or Nothing’. Think about it. There’s something or someone that inspired you to be who you are today.

Now, think about how amazing it could be if you could become your version of that person.  My college professors watched me and nurtured my desire for a career in entertainment. They made sure I was prepared to pursued it. I’m so thankful for that. In addition to being an educator and author, I became a professional recording artist right after college. So, what great talents do you possess? Are you paying attention? Is there something you do that just sets you apart from the rest? If you’re not sure, let this be your wake up call! There is an awesome, unique individual inside of you that you have yet to discover.

Start paying attention to some of your creative interests. Think of ways to nurture those talents outside of school. Are there clubs or organizations that may interest you? When you connect to something you enjoy, notice your mood. If you get excited, it’s time to make it a part of your daily life. Once you discover your interests, there will be goals to reach and a desire to see them through. Your initial purpose will be self-fulfilling, but ultimately you’ll want others to share the feeling and you will eventually WANT to pay it forward.
