Mission Statement

The Back to Me Project is a four-part workshop series designed to help students become self-advocators of social and emotional trauma, courageous and effective leaders amongst their peers, self-disciplined individuals of mental health and wellness, while being passionate about their academic success and career goals to positively influence their communities.

This workshop series was inspired by Yoli Tamu’s personal journey through the stressors of college life as described in her book entitled, “Back to Me: A Devotional Walk for the College Freshman Woman”. Students will explore the life lessons learned in the book, compare their own lives to similar circumstances, and be inspired to apply collaborative strategies through group activities, in order to develop social and interpersonal skills related to roommates, dating partners, alcohol, drug use, and violence.

About Yoli Tamu, the Creator and Workshop Facilitator

YOLI TAMU (also known as Yolonda Tamu Snell) enjoys performing and offering her insights to help empower women of all ages. She is an educator and singer/songwriter who believes in the positive reinforcement and personal development of young women. As the founder of the Unity Theatre Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization designed to serve as an outlet of creative expression for young people, Yoli credits the performing arts education she received for helping build her self-confidence, enhance her social development, and spark her desire to inspire others to fulfill their dreams. For the past 18 years, Yoli has taught elementary, high school and college students. She understands the challenges young people face growing up in this ever-changing world. She earned a Master of Education Degree in Cross-Cultural Teaching from National University in La Jolla, California, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre from Howard University in  Washington, D.C.

Yoli is also a former Warner Bros. Records label recording artist who has co-written songs for film and television. One of her notable theme songs, “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Sunshine,” can be heard in the cherished and acclaimed motion picture, “Deliver Us from Eva,” starring Gabrielle Union and LL Cool J. This is her first book and workshop series for college women, and she is excited to give her students an inside look behind the music and her journey into womanhood.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.
